Best photo hands-down of last night’s celebration, illustrating the emotional hardships of being a Sox fan.

Selling condoms in India

I have to say, this is one of the most creative uses of vernacular form to convince a patriarchal society of the right thing to do.

Elliott Kalan on Turkey and U.S.

Good friend Guliz sent along this op-ed from Daily Show writer Elliott Kalan. It’s worth reading if only for the the analogy of the U.S. and Turkey as chest-bumping frat boys.

The Warring Society

“Bobby” Jindal, the first Indian American governor in U.S. history, has found his way into marking a turning point in American history. The LA Times writes how he is the “first nonwhite to hold the job in Louisiana since Reconstruction” and NY Times writes that Jindal “made a particular campaign target of conservative northern and eastern parishes of Louisiana by visiting them frequently and bringing his brand of devout Christianity to their rural churches,” teaching “intelligent design” among other views touted by social Conservatives.

I think of Eric Foner’s comment in A Short History of Reconstruction where he writes that the Civil War inaugurated a widespread enlistment of African-Americans into the army as it was one of only paths towards political freedom, advancement and respectability.

Jindal is not an army man, but rather a soldier of sorts for a group of elite South Asians who see education as the only path for self-representation in a resolutely warring society.

Update: a varied set of responses elicted by Jindal.

Megan Williams case

I’ve just learned of a heinous crime perpetrated by six men and women in West Virginia. The details of case are harrowing, but what I’ve been wondering since I read the story is why this hasn’t been covered more widely, especially by the New York Times or many other mainstream newspapers. The AP is covering the story, but I’m staggered something like this isn’t more important, say as much as Britney’s custody hearing.
